Weekly Featured Artist & GIVEAWAY: Iacua Jewelry

I love featuring other jewelry artists.... especially the ones that do amazing things that I have no idea how to do! So, this week, I am quite happy to present the lovely work of Ruby Iacuaniello. Her work is lovely, all handmade and totally unique. My personal favorites are her rings. Ruby has this lovely way of positioning stones in delightfully different ways and the bezels look like snazzy little crowns!

Name:  Kairi (Ruby) Iacuaniello
Business: iacua

Iacua can be found online at:
The Basics:
I have been creating, painting and drawing my entire life. After five years in the fashion jewelry industry I decided to return to school. I studied metalworking at the Revere Academy in San Francisco and completed the graduate program. My sister is my business partner, she has an extensive background in marketing and journalism. She also brings many ideas to the design table. I have an adorable 10 month son, Aodhan Kai. It is just amazing to watch him grow and respond to the world... so exciting!

1. What five words best describe you?
Happy, motivated, hopeful, dreamer, optimist.

2. What five words best describe your work?
Organic, natural, botanical, elegant, modern.

3. What was the very first art form you fell in love with, and, do you still do it?
I first wanted to be a painter, specifically an oil painter. I planned to live in Venice and sell my paintings to tourists. That has not happened yet….. I don’t paint at this point but I do want to get back into it soon.

4. What was your very worst ‘real’ job?
I very briefly worked as a hotel maid. It was hard, unrewarding work. That was a job I never regretted leaving.

5. Is artwork your full-time life? Or, if not, are you planning to make it that way? If so, what’s your favorite part about being a full-time creative?
I am doing my jewelry full time right now. I am a new mother so that is my other full time job…. I guess at this point I spend more time being a mom, however I spend most of my waking hours dreaming up new and interesting projects.

6. What do you think is the single most important thing you could tell an artist just starting out?
I would say the most important thing is to just keep at it. There will be lots of rejections, just keep pushing. You can’t fail if you don’t quit trying.

7. What is your favorite way to distribute our work (craft shows, online, galleries, etc…), and why?
I prefer online sales because I have so little free time. That said it is always so rewarding to meet customers and hear how much they love a piece.

8. What are your five favorite blogs and/or websites?
http://etsy.com
http://www.ganoksin.com/ (the best metalsmithing resource)
http://etsymetal.blogspot.com/ (a wonderful group of metal artists)
http://dragonfireoceanmist.wordpress.com/ (a wonderful blog by a wonderful author)
http://bluechairfruit.com/ (I just got hooked on their jams….. so good)

9. Favorite artist?
I don’t know if I can pick a favorite…. Whatever I am looking at at the time! I really like Frida Kahlo for color, Arthur Rackham for detail, Bob Dylan for words… Right now I am really loving Mary Tivador’s work. http://shop.artist-xchange.com/title.php?ititlenum=18102

10. Guilty pleasure?
Bath + wine + book.

~~~ GIVEAWAY ~~~
Ruby has generously offered one winner their choice of either of the following lovely little poppy necklaces:
TO ENTER:
- Go to Ruby's Etsy page. Find your very favorite item.
- After that, come on back and leave a comment below telling us what your favorite item was and why (the 'why' is the part we really look for when deciding on a winner... so be creative! Tell us how you would use it, why it appeals to you, what you find unique about it....that sort of thing).
You may enter only once (but keep reading for the loophole on that). The contest is open until 4pm Pacific time on the Monday following the original feature (so it's open for about six days). Winners will be posted on Tuesday morning, along with the new featured artist's piece. If you have any questions, please contact me, not the artist.
IMPORTANT: If you want to be contacted (if you are the winner), you need to leave your email address in your comment (I suggest spelling out the @(at) and the .(dot) to avoid spam from internet crawlers, or you may also leave your Etsy screen name, if applicable. If you don't leave either, you need to check back and contact me by the Friday following the contest ending to see of you won, and will need to email me (see Winner's Box in the upper right sidebar).
Bonus Entries- **You can earn an extra entry for each of the following: Follow my blog and/or follow me on Facebook. Both links are on the right-hand sidebar. Just make sure you note that you did these in your comment below (no need to leave multiple comments, you'll get an entry for each thing you do, just put it all into one comment)!**
Please note: The winner is chosen by me and the featured artist based on your responses...so make 'em good! We make no claims that the selection is random:) It is between you and the featured artist to coordinate the getting of your loot. I make no personal guarantees about time-frame for delivery, value, or condition of the winning item.
~~ Last Week's Winner: Alice! Hope you enjoy the Wanderlust!  ~~
I love the jeweled twig ring, sterling, turquoise, sapphire because the aesthetic of nature-themed jewelry is so appealing and relaxing, and turquoise is (in my opinion) the best stone out there! omydarlingblog(at)gmail(dt)com
the 14K coral branch is my favourite - i love the organic form - it feels timeless yet modern - and serves as a beautiful memento of the beauty of our oceans (and our duty to protect them!)
I LOVE the primavera pendant! Not only is green my favorite color but you can tell that this necklace will look completely original because each stone will look slightly different with its own markings. I love that this is a piece of jewelry that I can wear with a plain shirt to dress it up. This piece of jewelry makes a statement, and it's saying, I'm one of a kind! :)
Ps. I'm now a GFC blog follower!
I love the seaweed necklace! This may sound kind of weird but seaweed always reminds me of my Grandma! When I was younger we would play "seaweed wars" in the water at our property on Lopez Island in Washington state. We'd go out into the FREEZING cold water and throw seaweed at each other. Weird, right? But there you have it. I miss my grandma everyday. :)
I really loved the shop, and the three pieces I liked the most (yes, three, 'cause I couldn't pick one :P) were Sand the angel kitty, sterling silver winged cat pendant, Carnival in Venice, sterling and glass pendant on velvet and Aphrodite ring. First of all, they're so unique! I've never seen anything like them. When I saw the kitty pendant I was like "Huh? Is it cat? is it a plane? No, it's an angel kitty with wings!!" I got a similar reaction when I saw the Aphrodite ring. Took me a while to figure out what's it made of. Well, actually, I wouldn't have figured it out by myself - I read the description :P I'm not a jewelry maker, but nevertheless, I probably wouldn't even think about using a button to make a ring. This lady is fabulous.
Byyyy the way, I'm already a blog follower via GFC.
Phoenix egg ring, sterling and vintage glass the reason I love this ring so much is that I have been looking for about six months for something to give my daughter soon. She is just starting to enter puberty and when she gets her period I will want to give her a peice of red jewelry, in a perfect world it would be a actual ruby, but I am not sure that will happen.This ring is what I am looking for in style, very old, very classic in style in that she could wear it for the rest of her life and it does not scream that her mom gave it to her for any "reason" LOL. I want her to be so proud of being a woman, and proud of who she is. A beautiful peice of jewlry is just the start of a wonderful comming of age process that she will be going threw over the next few years :)
Love almost all of the pieces! But I must choose, so I'd say the anis estrella necklace. If I had the funds, I think I'd buy all of my jewelry from this shop. This particular piece stuck out to me because of its delicacy and organic form. I've been wearing the same turquoise pendant for years now and this piece would be a good replacement as everyday jewelry. Plus the name struck me! My husband is Yucatec Maya and anise is one of the ingredients in Xtabentun, which is their traditional liquor.
And...get ready for this, as it's a bit convoluted....estrella is eek in his language, which closely resembles ek, which means jaguar, and is his mother's nickname for him. When I was just learning words in Maya, I'd confuse star and jaguar because they were so close. Wearing this necklace would remind me of my favorite parts of his culture and him, especially when I want to smack him!
It was so hard to decide but my favorite is the Hera pendant. I adore poppies and much like the description about them and their 'mystical qualities' I fell in love with the idea of them from the Wizard of Oz....the field of poppies ;) Anyway, this necklace is breathtaking...I love the purple/blue gray colors - I am sure that I would adore wearing it. Thanks for the chance to win!
I love the anis estrella pendant. My mom used to make anise bread with little anise stars, and I remember being fascinated with them. I'm fascinated with most natural forms, but especially tiny things like seeds, nuts, moss, and I love the combination of raw and polished in this piece. I feel like you could take it in any direction, from glamour to punk to worn out jeans, and it would be perfect everytime, I think that's the beauty of nature.
My favorite item is your Garnet, Amethyst and Poppy Pod, sterling silver charm pendant,.
WHY?!
It's a unique necklace with my fiancee's birthstone and mine that's not the typical Etsy cookie cutter birthstone necklace. (You know they type.)
Beautiful shop. The cat with antlers is AWESOME! It's like a Cat-a-lope! :)
I absolutely LOVE all of the twig rings. My boyfriend and I live in the middle of nowhere and often go for walks and drives into the forest-- trees are always changing from season to season, but it's the branches and twigs that stay the same.
Violet in the forest, sterling twig pendant with amethyst is my favorite piece for several reasons, number one, my birth stone, my birthday is in February, number two, it's such a unique piece, I like to wear jewelry where strange come up to me and say, I love your necklace, your ring, your earrings, where did you get it....I love the WOW factor and everything I saw in your shop was WOW....you get a piece of jewelry anywhere, but to get something that stands out and others notice, that's what I look for. I even "hearted" your shop to go back again and again.
I like th Glacier Ring, It just sticks out to me, it reminds me of icicles in the winter time or alaska but without all the coldness (which is a huge plus!) it also has a shimmer to it! Its cute and simple at the same time and would go great with any outfit which i really look for in jewelry.
I LOVE the summer blackberry earrings because I have wonderful memories of going camping in the Arizona summers and finding a wild blackberry bramble. Peacocks would stalk around the bramble and make noise while we frantically ate the berries as we picked them!
