What do you love about your work?

I love being able to offer people the opportunity to make their homes as individual as they are. Our homes are the one place we can be completely ourselves without outside influence; naturely, its the place we feel at our most comfortable and the place we're most likely to fill with our history and personal style. Being able to design and create items that I know people have chosen to include in these very personal spaces is amazing to me; I couldn't ever make anything that I wouldn't love to have in my own 'ideal' home so the fact that my products are going towards making someone else's home complete is so satisfying for me.

What's the best gift you've ever been given?

Ooh, this is a hard one; 27 years equates to a lot of wonderful gifts! On a life affirming level I'd have to say my son was the best gift I could ever have hoped for; and without him I doubt I would ever have had the courage or opportunity to turn my dream into reality (hence the name 'Yolki'; this is my son's nickname as he was just a small yolk of a thing when I first saw him!). On a less twee note I'd have to say that my best gift is the beautiful cake stand a close friend recently presented me with; it doesn't sound like a particularly significant gift I know, but it's the first step in my aim to become a domestic goddess!

What do you do to make your customers feel special?

As I've mentioned, I hope that my customers choose to shop with Yolki because they find some personal connection with the pieces I create. My ideal design is one that is created with a specific individual and scheme in mind and I would always encourage customers to approach me with their personal preferences; I'm continously updating my stock of vintage fabric and I'd love to match the patterns and prints I've chosen to the person who would appreciate them the most. I'm also very excited to be working on an exclusive special gift for my customers but the design is still in progress so I won't say too much yet!

What are you working on to make your work stand out this holiday season?

Currently, I'm working on some more designs inspired by a vintage book of stunning 1950's Norwegian patterns I came across; I like to work with silhouettes, outlines and statement motifs and I adore the bold simplicity of the Norwegian style. I'm also working on a range of customizable items with a slightly secretive twist...

What do you want people to know about you / your work?

I think the most important thing I'd like to convey about my work is that it has no boundries or constraints; I have a fleeting imagination and I can't help being intrigued by new techniques and experimenting with different materials, styles and techniques. I'm happy to admit that my preference is towards the more eclectic side of home decor; I don't think that we can ever pigeon-hole ourselves into one particular interior 'style' as we have so much history to convey in our choices of home accessories. I design, create and source items that mean something to me; and I hope that they will also mean something to my customers.

What's your favorite thing about the holidays?

I'm afraid that I'm a typical Brit when it comes to Winter and I do love to complain about the weather... but in truth this is actually the most endearing time of the year for me as far as the 'great outdoors' goes. Waking up and stepping outside into a frosty morning with the sun shining is one of the most beautiful things I've ever encountered; everything appears so sharp and clear against it's frosted background and its that stark contrast which makes you appreciate all of the little wonders of nature that get lost in the haze of Summer.

All Star Artist's Week - DISCOUNT and GIVEAWAY: Yorktown Road

There is really nothing out there like Yorktown Road. Her colors and textures are so incredibly rich and unique, I wish my whole wardrobe was made from them! I totally adore how her line is completely organic in feel and completely constructed with the utmost care for symmetry and craftsmanship at the same time.

I am thrilled to have Carol back this week, and I hope you are too!

What do you love about your work?
I love that the pieces look interesting and beautiful but are completely usable and wearable. They really cross that line between formal and informal.

What’s the best gift you have ever been given?
My children always bring me pieces of art they make or items they find in nature. They often tell me they knew I would like their gift because of its color or it has a lot of texture like the things I make. The thought they put into their offerings is what I find so special. I keep many of their pieces on my inspiration board.

What do you do to make your customers feel special?
Whenever possible, I like to wrap each piece beautifully with a textured card. There is nothing more fun than receiving a lovely package to open!

What are you working on to make your work stand out this holiday season?
Some smaller pieces such as textured cards, sachets and some really fun multi-colored hand dyed pieces. I want to offer a variety of pieces that are smaller and affordable for those who want to give a special gift without breaking the bank.

What do you want people to know about you and/or your work?
I put a lot of care into each piece I make, from start to finish. I truly work to make each item special and hope that shows through. Every day I feel so fortunate to do work that I enjoy.

*Bonus Question*: What’s your favorite thing about the holidays?
I love watching the traditions that develop within our little family. My kids love to decorate packages by drawing pictures and using color and glitter. The laughter every time we bring out the hand-crafted stuffed “Santa and Mrs. Claus” that I won in an auction. Making cookies and goodies with my kids. The bowl full of nuts that my daughter Audrey sits at constantly with a nutcracker… and the shells that she leaves all over the floor. The annual breaking of one of my vintage ornaments. The traditional fire I start in the oven with a tea towel. Simply spending time with my husband and children.

All Star Artist's Week - DISCOUNT and GIVEAWAY: Dodeline Design

Name:  Sarah Early

Business:  Dodeline Design

Web:  http://www.stationerybydodeline.com
http://www.etsy.com/shop/dodelinedesign

What do you love about your work?  I love the ability to be creative.  I have always been the kind of person who has a million ideas and projects going on, and working for myself as a stationery designer gives me that flexibility to always be trying new things.

What’s the best gift you have ever been given?  A trip to Paris.  Need I say more?

What do you do to make your customers feel special?  I always reach out to say thank you and include notes with my customers’ purchases.  I’m a very friendly and warm person, so I sincerely hope that comes through to my customers.  I also ship same day or next day so they don’t have to wait too long!

What are you working on to make your work stand out this holiday season (feel free to add pics of new items here)?

I have released my first calendar design this year.  Last year at this time I was an Etsy newbie and floundering to figure out this crazy community, so this year I’m much better prepared J  I have come out with personalized gift sets and lots of what I hope are unique designs for holiday card giving.

What do you want people to know about you and/or your work?

I want people to know how passionate I am about what I do, and that I am so thankful everyday that I get to do what I love to do and that other people appreciate it.  I put a little piece of myself into everything I do, so when I hand it off to a customer, I’m hopeful that we are building a long-term relationship together.  For that reason, I love to do custom pieces or quantities.

*Bonus Question*: What’s your favorite thing about the holidays?

Christmas morning.  I’m a real little kid about it.  My dad seriously got up and made a fire and set the video camera up at 7AM every Christmas until I was 22, and would wake me up and say “Sarah, Santa came.”  I’m now moved out and starting my own Christmas morning traditions with my high school sweetheart.  It’s just the happiest most magical morning of the year, not because of the presents, but because we’re all there [and behaving] and it’s just special.  And yes, I’m a total sap for the holidays.

Discount Offered: 15% for Z&R readers (in her Etsy Shop)

Discount Code: ZIPANDRUTH

Giveaway Item(s): 4 pack of Arabesque Notecards (like these >>>>>>>>)

To win the Giveaway: Head over to Sarah's Etsy shop. Come back and tell us (in the comments section) which one of her photographs would make a great gift for someone in your life, and why. All Star Artist's Week - DISCOUNT and GIVEAWAY: Carrie Bilbo Jewelry

I am a sucker for things made out of metal, and I am a sucker for amazing handmade jewelry. So...  I am a BIG sucker for Carrie Bilbo's work. In short, it rocks a LOT, and apparently, you all thought so to because her feature last year was a huge hit.

It is my great pleasure to present Ms. Carrie Bilbo and her amazing designs.
-illana

Name: Carrie Bilbo
Business: Carrie Bilbo Art Jewelry

What do you love about your work?
I love that my work is not just a piece of cheap jewelry or accessory. It is a handmade piece of art work,  a wearable sculpture that is made completely by me, the artist. I also love the feeling and joy I get from making a new piece that I think is really great or sometimes even the sense of accomplishment I get. Once and a while when I do a really difficult technique or piece of work and it is finished, I am honestly impressed with myself. That feeling is one of the feelings that keeps me going, because owning my own business can get pretty hard, stressful, and lonely at times.

What’s the best gift you have ever been given?
Although I am very thankful for all of the jewelry tools that have been given to me as gifts over the past few years, I can't really think of any gift off the top of my head that could be given quite the title of "best gift ever".  So instead I will name a memorable christmas/ christmas gift. One Christmas maybe when I was maybe 6 or so, my two best friends and I really wanted these Magic Nursery Triplet dolls for Christmas. They just seemed like the coolest things in the world from the commercials. Then Christmas came and of course I got them. Then my family and I went over my two best friends' house for Christmas dinner and I show up at the door with my triplets, in their little carrier, around my waist (like a fanny pack). I come in to the house and both my friends got them too and had the carriers around their waists as well. We wore them all of Christmas day and probably for the next month straight. It must have been a pretty funny sight to see, but I remember those little triplet dolls being the coolest things ever. My two best friends and I still talk about them and that Christmas.

What do you do to make your customers feel special?
I would say one thing I do is communication. I send emails thanking them for their order and double checking sizes and such. I get a lot of questions and special requests too,  so I think having that open line of communication between the buyer and seller makes it a more personal experience and that they are buying from an artist and not a machine. I do a lot of custom work as well, so when I do that I am always communicating back and forth very thoroughly so the customer gets exactly what they are looking for.

What are you working on to make your work stand out this holiday season (feel free to add pics of new items here)?
Idk about stand out, but I have been and will continue to add a lot of new items, mostly from my new collection, "The Twentyten Collection." Then I will be running some sales here and there on pieces up until Christmas as well.

What do you want people to know about you and/or your work?
That it is real, and will last forever. I feel most of my work is very timeless in design as it is, but also it is a very well crafted piece of art and will last. Every step of the process of my jewelry is me; From the design of the piece, to the design of my logo, to the making of the piece, to the sales, packaging, and shipping of the piece. When you buy one of my pieces of jewelry you are buying from the artist and are buying a well crafted piece of art. This is not a big company to where the design is stolen from an artist, then changed 11%, sent off to China, sent back to the US, and then sold at a 500% markup. My work is art and it is real,  it will last forever.

*Bonus Question*: What’s your favorite thing about the holidays?
I guess that is brings people together. Going home, back to Cincinnati, and getting to see my family and friends. Also making cookies and delicious sweet items ( I have a huge sweet tooth), and then stuffing your face with them for a few days with no judgement. lol…
